The brief

What we were asked for

The ordering platform already held the best database of mobile caterers we could build. The brief was to make that database earn twice: a free public directory that people searching for a food truck actually find, and which puts every listed trader one step away from the software.

The challenge

What made it difficult

The constraints that shaped every decision after them.

  • A directory nobody can find is a database with a homepage. The site had to be built around the searches people really make.
  • Two websites on one database usually means two codebases drifting apart, two moderation queues and two versions of the truth.
  • The directory had to look and read like a separate business, because a thin sales funnel wearing the platform’s branding converts nobody.
  • Traders list for free, so the site has to be worth their time before it asks them for anything.

What we built

How we solved it

The decisions that mattered, and why we made them.

01

One database, two front doors

Not a fork and not a copy: the directory is a separate application sharing the platform’s backend outright, so a caterer edits one profile and both sites are correct.

02

Landing pages built on real demand

A page per event type — weddings, festivals, corporate days and thirteen more — each with structured data for search engines and written for the person actually planning the event.

03

A deliberately different brand

Charcoal and lime against the platform’s warm orange. The two sites never share a palette on a page, because the directory has to stand on its own to be believed.

04

Free listings as the product

Traders get a genuine free listing with genuine enquiries; the ordering software is the offer that follows, not the price of entry.

The outcome

Where it got to

  • A second acquisition channel that costs nothing per trader and improves with every listing.
  • Sixteen search-led landing pages, each answering a real query rather than repeating a homepage.
  • One moderation queue and one dataset behind both websites.
