The brief

What we were asked for

Outdoor events happen where there is no line, no cabinet and often no usable mobile signal — and every trader taking card payments, every ticket scan and every visitor posting a photo depends on one. The brief was connectivity that arrives in a van, powers itself, and earns money while it is on site.

The challenge

What made it difficult

The constraints that shaped every decision after them.

  • A field has no infrastructure and frequently no mains, so the whole system has to carry its own backhaul and its own power.
  • Coverage across a site is a mesh problem, and the mesh has to survive being put up by whoever is available on the day.
  • Free access is what visitors expect; paid access is what pays for the satellite capacity. Both have to exist on one network without one cannibalising the other.
  • Organisers will only host it if there is something in it for them, which means the money has to split automatically and visibly.

What we built

How we solved it

The decisions that mattered, and why we made them.

01

Backhaul that comes with you

Satellite uplink into commercial-grade routers with solar support, so the deployment does not depend on anything already being at the venue.

02

Mesh coverage, not one hotspot

Multiple nodes cover an arena rather than a marquee, configured from a single management view instead of unit by unit.

03

A captive portal that sells

Visitors land on a branded portal on its own subdomain, get a free tier immediately and can pay for more bandwidth in a few taps through Stripe.

04

Revenue the organiser can see

Takings are split per event and reported per event, so hosting the kit is a revenue line for the organiser rather than a favour.

The outcome

Where it got to

  • Connectivity for events in locations where fixed lines and mobile coverage are not options.
  • Free access for visitors funded by paid upgrades rather than by the organiser.
  • A per-event revenue share that gives venues a commercial reason to say yes.
