The brief

What we were asked for

Selling digital cut files is a production problem before it is a retail one: every design has to be traced, exported in five formats, described, titled, tagged, priced and listed on more than one marketplace. The brief was to make one upload produce all of that, and to sell the results from a shop we own rather than only from someone else’s.

The challenge

What made it difficult

The constraints that shaped every decision after them.

  • Laser cutters, vinyl plotters and print shops all want different formats from the same artwork, and a bundle missing one of them is a refund.
  • Marketplace listings are the slowest part of the job — titles, tags, descriptions and images, written by hand, per design, per marketplace.
  • Automatic tracing had to produce paths a cutter will actually follow, not a decorative approximation.
  • Publishing directly to a live marketplace from an automated pipeline risks putting a bad listing in front of customers with nobody having looked at it.

What we built

How we solved it

The decisions that mattered, and why we made them.

01

One upload, a full bundle

Raster artwork is traced to SVG and derived to PNG, DXF, EPS and PDF in one pass, so every customer gets the format their machine reads without anyone opening a drawing package.

02

Cataloguing that writes itself

Titles, descriptions, tags and categories are generated from the artwork itself and held against the design, so a thousand-file catalogue stays searchable instead of becoming a folder of numbers.

03

Drafts, never live listings

Etsy and eBay listings are created as drafts by design. The pipeline does the typing; a person still presses publish, which keeps an automated system from ever putting something wrong in front of a buyer.

04

Its own storefront

The same catalogue powers savagesvgs.co.uk, with instant delivery after payment — a marketplace listing is a lead as well as a sale, and the shop is where the margin is.

The outcome

Where it got to

  • A design goes from upload to a complete, described, multi-format product in a single step.
  • The same catalogue sells through marketplaces and through a shop we control, without duplicate data entry.
  • The platform now feeds a second business — the print-on-demand shop below runs on its API.
